Bahrain FP1: Kobayashi fastest in weather affected session
Below are the main headlines from the first free practice session for the Bapco Energies 8 Hours of Bahrain.
Hypercar
- No.7 Toyota Gazoo run GR010 Hybrid Hypercar of Kamui Kobayashi sets the pace in rain and wind affected FP1 session in Bahrain.
- Kobayashi sets a 1m49.856s best lap in session which is red flagged due to gusty winds in the area. The delay is followed by a session extension before heavy rain then arrives in final 30mins.
- Kobayashi and teammates Mike Conway and Jose Maria Lopez are attempting to reduce 15pts gap to Buemi, Hartley and Hirakawa.
- Toyota places 1-2 as Buemi sets a 1m49.960s lap, which is 0.1secs off the No.7 Toyota.
- Proton Competition Porsche 963 driven by Gianmaria Bruni grabs third position ahead of the two Porsche Penske 963 machines as No.6 (Vanthoor) leading No.5 (Christensen) sister 963.
- Hertz Team JOTA are sixth as Will Stevens sets a 1m50.507s best lap in the gold delivered Porsche Hypercar.
- Cadillac Racing are seventh on first visit to Bahrain as Alex Lynn peaks on a 1m51.522s best.
- Ferrari AF Corse end session eighth and ninth with No.51 (Calado) heading No.50 (Molina) 499P
- No.94 Peugeot TotalEnergies 9X8 Hypercar rounds out top 10, with No.93 car 11th
- Floyd Vanwall 12th as Ryan Briscoe gets first laps as he joins Esteban Guerrieri and Tristan Vautier for final round of 2023

LMP2
- No.22 United Autosports entry heads LMP2 category as the popular class gets ready for final race in WEC after 11 seasons.
- Vector Sport takes second position as Gabriel Aubry laps within 0.6s of Albuquerque's best.
- The No.31 WRT takes third position as Ferdinand Habsburg claims best time in because he shares with Sean Gelael and Robin Frijns.
- Monza winners Jota take fourth ahead of the No.63 Prema Oreca-Gibson, No.36Alpine ELF Team and title leading No.41 Team WRT car.
- Robert Kubica, Rui Andrade and Luis Deletraz are strong favorites and LMP2 champions elect as they enjoy large 33-point advantage with just 39 to play for.
LMGTE Am
- LMGTE Am sees the No.777 D'Station Aston Martin lead the way as Tomonobu Fuji sets best lap as Aston Martin endeavor to get first win of 2023 in Bahrain.
- Kessel Racing is the highest placed Ferrari with a 1m59.522 set by Daniel Serra.
- GR Racing makes it three manufacturers in the top three places with Ben Barker stops the clocks on a 1m59.550 lap.
- No.21 AF Corse places fourth but ends session having to be recovered from track after problem for Frank Dezoteux.
- Already crowned champions, the No.33 Corvette Racing entry, ends session in eight position as Ben Keating, Nicky Catsburg and Nicolas Varonne attempt to break points record in final LMGTE Am round on Saturday.
