WEC drivers celebrate success at Daytona
Following his victory with Toyota Gazoo Racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans last June, Spanish two-time world champion Fernando Alonso has won his second 24-hour race in seven months.
Alonso, together with fellow Toyota driver Kamui Kobayashi, DragonSpeed LMP1 driver Renger van der Zande and American Jordan Taylor drove faultlessly, in particular through torrential rain in the second half of the race, at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in Florida. The event was brought to a premature close due to dangerous track conditions after two red flag stoppage periods.
In LMP2, DragonSpeed’s Roberto Gonzalez and Pastor Maldonado and team mates secured the coveted Rolex winners’ watches, while in the GTE categories BMW Motorsport’s Augusto Farfus – a last-minute replacement for Tom Blomqvist who was unable to get visa issues resolved – was one of four drivers to take victory for the German marque.
