Dindo Capello named as Grand Marshal for WEC 6 Hours of Monza
Three-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner and former Audi factory driver Dindo Capello has been named Grand Marshal for the upcoming 6 Hours of Monza, round five of FIA WEC (7-9 July).
Italy’s Capello started his motorsport career back in 1983 racing in Formula 3 from 1985 – 1990. He moved from single-seaters to TouringCars before making his Le Mans debut in 1998. In 1999, he partnered with Allan McNish – the pair winning American Le Mans Series that year. He won ALMS a further two times, in 2006 and 2007 as well as winning the 2012 Sebring 12 Hours five times and Le Mans three times (as well as pole position on three occasions at Le Mans).
Capello retired from sportscars in 2012 but continued to race for Audi in the Italian GT3 Championship for a while after. As Grand Marshal at Monza, Capello will lead the FIA WEC cars on the formation lap ahead of the official race start at 12h30 local time on Sunday 9 July.
Dindo Capello commented: “It’s a great honour for me to be the Grand Marshal for Monza - my home race track. It feels extra special right now after the historic win of Ferrari a few weeks ago at Le Mans and all the enthusiasm for WEC in Italy. I feel very proud that after 15 years from my last win, two Italian drivers also achieved the highest step of the podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. I’m sure that Monza will be an epic event for Italian motorsport and will be a very special atmosphere. I wish all teams and drivers safe, fast and spectacular race.”
