An Evo version of Porsche's World Endurance Championship-winning 919 Hybrid LMP1 car has today broken the unofficial lap record at Circuit Spa-Francorchamps – the venue for the opening round of the 2018-2019 Super Season.
Neel Jani lapped the 7km track in a time of 1:41.770 in a specially modified car, beating the 2017 pole position time of F1’s Lewis Hamilton by 0.78 seconds. This time was also 12 seconds faster than Porsche’s 2017 WEC 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps pole time.
Porsche is embarking on a 'world tour' with its now-retired LMP1 car this year and made numerous changes to the 919 in a bid to demonstrate what the car is capable of, free of any regulatory restrictions.
Among the changes made to the 919 Evo were a bigger front diffuser and rear wing, the addition of DRS at the front and rear, and considerably increased power output.
