Fernando Alonso: “For me it was a privilege to be in the WEC”
Reigning FIA World Endurance Champion, two-time Le Mans winner and double Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso spoke about his desire to try the WEC’s new Hypercar class.
Chatting to Bruno Vandestick live on the 24 Hours of Le Mans Instagram channel, Alonso talked openly about his experience in the FIA WEC and how competitive Le Mans has become.
“For me it was a privilege to be in the WEC for a season and to drive with Toyota... a fantastic experience,” said Alonso.
He went on to explain what he loved most about his time in the championship: “I loved the team-mate atmosphere. Sébastien [Buemi] and Kazuki [Nakajima] have a lot of experience in endurance and they taught me a lot. If the team works better, it’s for your own benefit as well. We had so much fun together, they were amazing team-mates… That was the thing that I liked most in endurance – the team comradery.”
When asked if he would like to try the WEC’s new Hypercar class, Alonso gave a positive response: "Yes, I would say yes. I think Hypercar is a nice project together with different solutions. I know the WEC is going through a good progress now with IMSA. There are a lot of things in the future that will boost endurance and I want to be a part of that."
