The Champions Speak!
Read what some of the 2022 FIA WEC title winners have to say about their achievements...
Sébastien Buemi – Toyota Gazoo Racing – No.8 Toyota GR010 Hybrid Hypercar
“It’s amazing to win the World Championship this year. We maximised all the opportunities and doing the double of Le Mans and the title is an amazing feeling. Special credit to Ryo (Hirakawa) because he came into the team as a newcomer and he won in his first year.
“It is not easy to jump into a Hypercar and fight at the front against such strong competition but he has been an amazing team-mate. Car No.7 is always strong and it is never easy to beat them, as they showed today.
“We wanted to win the race and take the title in style but, despite a competitive start, we just didn’t have enough today. We will enjoy this feeling and then look to next year which will be a really exciting one.”
James Calado – AF Corse – No.51 Ferrari 488 GTE Evo KMGTE Pro
“We didn't win but winning the championship is an amazing achievement its three times world champion two in a row.
“Ferrari are manufactories championships again. It's sad to see GT Pro go because we've had great success. It's been my whole career at Ferrari and to end it as a world champion with these amazing guys is truly incredible.”
Roberto Gonzalez – Jota – No.38 Oreca-Gibson LMP2
“It feels amazing. This season has been mega for us, it's been a dream come true season.
“I'm so proud to be next to these two guys (Antonio Felix da Costa and Will Stevens). I want to thank these two guys for the mega effort they did and also Jota and the whole Jota team all the members of the engineering squad.
“We put a lot of effort going into this season. We've been with them for three years now working really hard for this.
“The previous years, the last two years, three years has been close. But never a season like this one. We didn't get the win today. But I'm very happy with third place. For me it was mega today and everything went perfect.”
Ben Keating – TF Sport – Aston Martin Vantage LMGTE Am
“We were really only racing the 98 for the championship. and because we had such a good start they had to kind of throw a few 'Hail Marys' in there.
“They (NorthWest AMR) left Paul (Dalla Lana) to run at the very end, and for a while there I wasn't quite sure how it was going to work out, and we needed to just stay close to them.
“ Even with five minutes left, you're still wondering what's the scenario that can happen that would cause us to not finish well, so it was really exciting.
“The win at Le Mans was the most special thing of my racing career, just because of the way we did it. We did it without having the fastest car and just I think it was a perfect race.
As I look back at this season with TF Sport, it's just been unbelievable. We get second place in the first two races, and we win Le Mans, we win at Fuji.
“I can't imagine having a better season than what we've had here.
“It's been a tribute to these guys, and everyone on the team. It's just been incredible.
