Unpredictability adds to WEC fascination

Unpredictable: a word that can have positive or negative meanings, but in the 2017 WEC it signifies just one thing – guaranteed racing excitement.

Ever since the first racing lap at Silverstone in April, the results for many of the categories have been impossible to predict.

The closeness of competition can be perfectly illustrated by some of the slender gaps between the competitors this season. At Silverstone the No.8 Toyota driven by Sebastien Buemi, Anthony Davidson and Kazuki Nakajima headed home the No.2 Porsche 919 Hybrid by just 6.15 seconds.

This margin though was nothing compared to the thrilling finale at Spa in May when just 1.95s separated first and second places.

LMP2 has seen some exceptional racing so far this season and at Spa there was one of the greatest ever battles for supremacy in the WEC when the G-Drive Racing ORECA-Gibson of Alex Lynn, Roman Rusinov and Pierre Thiriet took victory ahead of the #31 Rebellion and #28 TDS with all three covered by just over 20-seconds after six hours of non-stop action.

LMGTE Pro has seen some breath-taking battles too with each of the three rounds so far being won by a different manufacturer. Ford took victory at Silverstone as Tincknell, Priaulx and Derani took the silverware, while at Spa and Le Mans it was Ferrari and Aston Martin reaping the rewards of faultless races. Can Porsche, with their new 911 RSR model, make it four manufacturers to taste champagne at the end of Nürburgring weekend.

The LMGTE Am class too has seen some classic races, not least at Silverstone where three cars – the No.98 Aston Martin, No.54 Spirit of Race Ferrari and the No.61 Clearwater Ferrari entered the final corners all with a shot of victory! On that occasion the Clearwater car took a dramatic victory in a true grandstand finish.

So, expect more of the unpredictable at Nürburgring this weekend where 29 of the world’s most spectacular endurance sportscars are set to re-engage in ferocious battle over the whole six hours of multiple class exhilaration.
