Stat attack: the WEC goes to Monza!
This week the FIA WEC will travel to Italy for the 6 Hours of Monza marking the second new event for the World Championship in less than two months (following the inaugural 8 Hours of Portimao in Portugal in June).
Below are ten Italian-based facts going into round three of WEC Season 9. With thanks to @WECData for the statistics.
1. Monza is set to feature the joint third-largest GTE Am field in #WEC history, with 16 cars matching the class entrants at #LeMans24 in 2017 and 2019. It is bettered only by 22 starters in 2020 and 18 in 2014.
2. Five drivers have scored their first #WEC win so far in 2021 – four of these are Italian. Rovera, Lacorte, Sernagiotto and Fuoco, all with Ferrari teams. (Scherer is the other, winning LMP2 with United Autosports USA)
3. Italian-flagged teams have combined for 34 class wins in the #WEC, the third-most of any nation, behind only Germany and the UK.
4. Italian-flagged teams won both GTE classes last time out in Portimao. It was the first time this had happened since AF Corse swept GTE at Silverstone 2016.
5. Portimao GTE Pro victory for AF Corse #51 meant they maintained the 100% streak of winning in every #WEC season. They are the only team to achieve this feat.
6. 37 cars are entered for #6hMonza, making this the second-largest #WEC field outside of #LeMans24. The only non-Le Mans race to see more starters was #6hSpa 2012, with 40 entrants.
7. Five Italian drivers have won with Porsche – Roda and Ruberti (2012), Cairoli (2017), and Pera (2019) in GTE Am, and Bruni (2019) in GTE Pro.
8. Teams representing 12 nations are on the Monza entry list – Japan, France, USA, Denmark, UK, Holland, Belgium, Poland, Slovakia, Switzerland, Italy, Germany.
9. A Ferrari sweep of GTE last time out at Portimao means four Italian drivers sit atop their classes. 2017 GTE World Champion Alessandro Pier Guidi holds a six-point advantage over rivals in GTE Pro. In GTE Am, Sernagiotto, Lacorte and Fuoco are 18 points ahead of fellow Prancing Horse rivals AF Corse #54, and Italy’s Castellacci and Fisichella.
10. 19 Italian drivers have at least one #WEC class win, with 14 of those victorious in a Ferrari. Only Capello (Audi, LMP1), Roda, Ruberti, Cairoli and Pera (Porsche, GTE Am) have won exclusively for other marques.
