Stevens wins new Goodyear Wingfoot award after Sebring race
In 2023, there is a new award for drivers in the FIA WEC’s LMP2 category to reward drivers who can perform at the ultimate limit for the longest period.
The award will be presented after each race this season to the fastest driver over a double stint. For the 24 Hours of Le Mans – round four of the World Championship – it will be the fastest driver over a triple stint.
Will Stevens from Hertz Team JOTA won the first Goodyear Wingfoot award for 2023 after proving to be the fastest LMP2 driver over a double stint at last week’s 1000 Miles of Sebring. He was awarded the prize following the race.
Goodyear and the WEC created this award to recognise drivers who deliver maximum performance and speed consistently over a longer period – ultimately highlighting the endurance factor which is crucial to success in sportscar racing.
Goodyear also award a free set of tyres to the winning driver’s team at each round of the championship. The Goodyear Wingfoot award mean drivers score points at each event of the season based on the same point scoring already used within the WEC.
For the end of season, the winning driver will receive three sets of tires for their team to use during the end of season rookie test in Bahrain. There will also be an overall award at the year end prize-giving ceremony.
