Toyota has revealed its GR Super Sport Concept car at the Tokyo Auto Salon in Japan, a car which features hybrid technology developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing in the WEC.
The new car, which has already run at Fuji Speedway, perfectly demonstrates the crossover of technology from racing to road production – one of the many benefits that manufacturers take from the FIA World Endurance Championship.
Featuring the same 2.4-litre twin-turbo V6 engine as the Toyota TS050 Hybrid, the GR Super Sport Concept delivers almost 1,000 bhp using both the traditional internal combustion engine and electric motors.
President of Toyota Gazoo Racing Shigeki Tomoyama said the new concept car is the starting point for Toyota’s plan to develop sports cars using the technology and experiences gained through its racing programmes.
“Rather than developing production cars into sports cars, we aim to work out how to incorporate the know-how developed through races and rallies into production cars.
“Although it will be some time before you all have the opportunity to get behind the wheel, I hope that the GR Super Sport Concept will give you a taste of what we aim to achieve with our next-generation sports cars.”
