Passionate: the term that may best describe the unique link between Great Britain and motorsport.
As evidence of this, there are many British drivers (20 in total) and British-based teams (CEFC TRSM Racing, Jackie Chan DC Racing, Ford Chip Ganassi Team UK, Aston Martin Racing, Gulf Racing, TF Sport) committed to the FIA World Endurance Championship.
Third round of the WEC Super Season, Silverstone will offer drivers the opportunity to measure up against each other on this challenging track. Over the 2.7 mile circuit, they will enjoy some of the best corners of the season such as the high-speed Maggots/Becketts sequence, Chapel or the great Copse blind corner.
The end of Second World War had left Britain with no major race track but an abundance of airfields. One of these surplus airfields, which had been used by the Royal Air Force, was located outside the village of Silverstone and, being roughly in the middle of England, was seen as an ideal location to bring back international motor racing to Britain.
By 1948 the Royal Automobile Club had arranged a one-year lease with the Air Ministry in the spirit of optimism and possibility that characterised the time. An ex-farmer, James Wilson Brown (whose name was decades later immortalised when the Jimmy Brown Centre was opened), was employed by the RAC and given just two months to turn the site from a wartime airfield and farm into a race track for the first RAC International Grand Prix.
Thus motorsport was born at Silverstone and, 70 years later, the Home of British Motor Racing is still considered as one of the most prestigious circuits in the world.
