Pascal Wehrlein will make his FIA World Endurance Championship bow earlier than originally planned, after Porsche confirmed that both the German and Nico Müller will join the manufacturer for the forthcoming TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps (8-10 May).
With Mathieu Jaminet and Matt Campbell on IMSA duty for Porsche Penske Motorsport at Laguna Seca on the same weekend as Spa, the reigning FIA WEC title-winning outfit was set to run just two drivers in each of its factory 963 Hypercars in Belgium – but the decision has now been made to add Wehrlein and Müller to the line-up in the Ardennes.
It was announced last month that defending FIA Formula E World Champion Wehrlein would join the German-American alliance for June’s 24 Hours of Le Mans alongside IMSA championship leaders Nick Tandy and Felipe Nasr – marking his maiden appearance in the legendary round-the-clock contest. In preparation for that, the ex-Formula 1 racer will team up with Kévin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor in the #6 Porsche hybrid prototype at Spa.
“It’s obviously first-class that I can celebrate my debut in FIA WEC at Spa-Francorchamps and get to know the way Porsche Penske Motorsport works even earlier – every competitive kilometre with the Porsche 963 counts,” acknowledged Wehrlein. “In Kévin and Laurens, I have two team-mates from whom I can learn a lot. I’m really looking forward to competing on such an iconic racetrack as the Belgian Grand Prix circuit.”
Fellow Porsche Formula E works driver Müller – who spent the 2023 and 2024 campaigns racing for Team Peugeot TotalEnergies in FIA WEC, finishing third in the Bahrain season finale last year – will partner Julien Andlauer and Michael Christensen in the sister #5 car at Spa. He will similarly join the squad at La Sarthe as official reserve driver.
“I’m super-happy to be supporting Porsche Penske Motorsport at Le Mans and doing my bit to help achieve the big goal – although of course I hope I won’t be needed there!” the Swiss star joked.
“I’m also looking forward to returning to FIA WEC and competing in the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps alongside Julien and Michael. Following my Sebring stint in IMSA and some testing, I will be able to complete more important laps with the Porsche 963. This is a great opportunity, and I would like to thank both Porsche Penske Motorsport and my Formula E team Andretti for making it possible.”
