What the LMP Drivers said after the 24 Hours of Le Mans
The thoughts of the LMP1 and LMP2 drivers after the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Fernando Alonso – Toyota Gazoo Racing No.8 Toyota TS050 HYBRID, overall winner
"It's amazing, I'm still a little bit in shock right now. It was very stressful at the end when we were all watching. It's been a very tense 24 hours. Maybe tomorrow, we'll start to realise! I felt okay in the traffic. Sometimes you're lucky for a few laps and then sometimes you're unlucky and you get in a bad loop but the race suited my driving style and it all worked out."
Sébastien Buemi – Toyota Gazoo Racing No.8 Toyota TS050 HYBRID, overall winner
"This is definitely the biggest win in my career. I was watching Kazuki for the last few laps and couldn't forget 2016. I'm still struggling to realise. Finally winning is just huge! When I incurred the penalty, I thought it was going to be difficult from then on. There was a gap of more than two minutes when I handed the car over to Fernando, but just 40 seconds when he'd finished. The balance of the car changes throughout the race and the two cars were very similar so congratulations to car #7 too."
Kazuki Nakajima – Toyota Gazoo Racing No.8 Toyota TS050 HYBRID, overall winner
(Tasked with the huge responsibility of the final stint): "It's just amazing. I'm speechless. Toyota gave us a very strong car. We all deserved to win but our car had a bit more luck perhaps, so I'm happy to be up here representing everybody."
Jean-Eric Vergne – G-Drive Racing No.26 ORECA 07 Gibson, LMP2 winner (before post-race scrutineering and disqualification)
I'm very pleased. I'm having a fantastic season in WEC, ELMS and now Le Mans. I did it with the team that gave me the best chance to win. We came with a very strong programme. It's hard when you're the favourite and it's your race to lose - and it wasn't as easy as it might have looked from the outside! What attracts me most is winning, I love to win. Everything's coming together now and one day, I hope to fight for the overall victory."
Roman Rusinov - G-Drive Racing No.26 ORECA 07 Gibson, LMP2 winner (before post-race scrutineering and disqualification)
"We've been here before and never won when we should have, when we had the right teammates and everything else, but I'm very happy that it finally happened this time. We made good time, were very efficient in the pit stops, we worked hard all winter for this so it's great."
Andrea Pizzitola - G-Drive Racing No.26 ORECA 07 Gibson, LMP2 winner (before post-race scrutineering and disqualification)
"It was a dream but the race felt a bit too easy at times! I kept waiting for a problem...but it's not only about luck. To manage the traffic, I asked the engineer to tell me when I had an LMP1 behind me and the gap with the next LMP2, and when that gap narrows then the pressure rises."
