Matt Campbell: “The rest of the season will be just as fierce”
The FIA WEC is no stranger to finding new stars and in 2019 there is a fine crop of young and aspiring racers making big headlines.
This Super Season has seen Matt Campbell as a major force in the No.77 Dempsey-Proton Racing Porsche 911 RSR entry. The 24-year-old from Warwick, Queensland, is a double Australian Porsche Carrera Cup champion and is one of the most exciting talents to come from Down Under in recent years.
Campbell moved to Europe in 2017 and placed a richly merited third in the Porsche Supercup before embarking on his WEC adventure with Dempsey-Proton in the summer of 2018.
Since then his driving has continued to grab headlines with wins at the Bathurst 12 Hours in January and then again with a superb display at the 1000 Miles of Sebring.
“2019 has started off really well with Bathurst [and Sebring] so has given us good momentum to take in to the end of the Super Season. There have been the obvious frustrations earlier in the season but we took the view that we can achieve some really strong results in the second half and that is exactly what we have done,” explained Campbell.
The Dempsey-Proton team fought back from the early season disqualifications to score a full compliment of points in Florida last month. It bodes ominously for their rivals in the LMGTE Am class for the rest of the Super Season.
“The team is really focused and we work on just getting the maximum from the team and the car. Fortunately, Dempsey-Proton Racing has a progressive attitude to going racing and I think we have formed a really strong unit together.
“We’ve seen that the LMGTE Am class has been super competitive this season, and for several reasons it is hard to say who is going to win any individual race. The rest of the season will be just as fierce with many possible winners. We will fight for every lap to try and finish the season as strongly as we can, that’s for certain,” concluded Campbell.
