Monza entry list reveals additional Hypercar with Proton Competition
Round five of the FIA WEC, the 6 hours of Monza (8-9 July), will see a total of 13 Hypercars on the grid as Proton Competition has confirmed it will join the WEC’s premier class with its Porsche 963.
Proton Competition’s entry is the second privately-run Porsche in the Hypercar category after Hertz Team JOTA made its debut with their Hypercar challenger at last month’s race meeting at Spa-Francorchamps. With Proton Competition, Hertz Team JOTA plus two factory-backed Porsche Penske Motorsport entries, Monza will see a total of four Porsche 963s on the grid – the most of any manufacturer thus far in the WEC’s Hypercar class.
Driving the No. 99 Proton Competition entry will be experienced GT drivers Gianmaria Bruni (Italy) and Harry Tincknell (UK). The third driver is still to be confirmed. There are no other notable changes in the Hypercar class for Monza but the No. 708 Glickenhaus entry has only confirmed Romain Dumas to drive with the two other drivers not yet listed.
All eyes will be on Ferrari for their home race, however, as the manufacturer will be eager to put on a strong show in front of the passionate Tifiosi and its two Ferrari 499P Hypercars.
In LMP2, due to a clash in race schedules, the No. 23 United Autosports entry will see Tom Blomqvist switched for Giedo Van der Garde. Likewise, the No. 22 sister car sees Ben Hanley replace regular driver Filipe Albuquerque. The other driver change in LMP2 is Mathias Beche who steps in for Mirko Bortolotti in the No. 63 Prema Racing Oreca 07 Gibson car.
Finally, LMGTE Am sees one less car with the No. 88 Proton Competition Porsche 911 RSR replaced by its new Hypercar entry and the No. 21 AF Corse Bronze driver (previously Diego Alessi) still to be named.
