My Le Mans preparation by André Negrão

Ever wondered what goes into preparing for a 24-hour endurance race? Signatech Alpine Matmut’s André Negrão gives FIAWEC.com an interesting insight…

I'm back to Brazil between Spa-Francorchamps and Le Mans and I will be preparing every single day for the 24 hour race.

In terms of training, I go for longer runs to help focus on the endurance side of things more. That’s just a natural thing to do when you are preparing to sit for so many hours at the wheel for Le Mans.

Three hours, four hours or maybe even a little more in the cockpit is all helped by some extra physical preparation.

I also do some karting, because in Brazil this is like part of everyday life and it help keeps me sharp.

Apart from that, I have a simulator session before Le Mans in Paris. Then we have the test days before I go to Italy to Viareggio with Riccardo Ceccarelli for a training camp. I'll train there for five days and then I'll come back to the race, so this is my plan for the moment.

There are specific things, training wise, that I focus on. It's more mental than physical to be honest. During the night it's much more mental too because it's cold and there are very long straights.

So, in the Ceccarelli training camp, we're focusing more on the mental side but of course the physical part is still important.  For racing at night, the test days definitely help and we tried to prepare a little bit at Sebring this year.

Another important part of the preparation for Le Mans is your kit and organising everything so you know exactly where it is. Last year it was more complicated because the truck was far from the car.

In the car, the visor is always open. During the night I will definitely put a white one on which is the best solution for visibility. For the day, it is a blue one, but we never close it. The rest is pretty much the same as it is at every other race.

We have to be prepared as much as we can for Le Mans but as I have already said, it’s more mental than physical which is why Le Mans is such an incredible challenge for everyone.
