Making Their Points after Monza!

The 2022 FIA World Endurance Championship title battles warmed up significantly at a scorching Monza last weekend as all the championship chases closed up after a highly eventful six hours of racing.

The Hypercar World Endurance Championship battle witnessed the Alpine Team ELF trio of Nicolas Lapierre, Andre Negaro and Matthieu Vaxiviere claim a second victory of the season. This extended their gap from three points to 10 as they scooped the maximum 25pts available on race day.

The second place gained by Brendon Hartley, Sebastien Buemi and Ryo Hirakawa sees the No.8 crew still lead the hunt of Les Bleues, but the No.7 Toyota Gazoo squad of Mike Conway, Jose-Maria Lopez and Kamui Kobayashi have lost some touch to the top two after their troubled Monza race, and they are now 30pts off the front and unlikely to be able to retain their WEC crown in 2022.

Toyota though can take some solace from Monza as they ultimately maintained their grip on the Hypercar World Endurance Manufacturers’ Championship, as they enjoy a 15-point gap over Alpine.

In the LMGTE Pro points tables it couldn’t be much tighter with five drivers being covered by two points in the GT FIA World Endurance Driver’s Championship.

Despite the disappointment of finishing third in Monza after leading the race for so long, James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi now lead the points standings after scoring 15 points Gimmi Bruni’s 10. With Kevin Estre and Michael Christensen just a point behind their stablemate, the title is really anyone’s with two races at Fuji and Bahrain remaining.

The GT Manufacturers points battle sees Porsche lead Ferrari by 14 points, while Corvette’s sensational victory at Monza boost their total points to 65, albeit 108 behind the two-pronged Ferrari and Porsche entries.

LMP2 saw Antonio Felix da Costa, Roberto Gonzalez and Will Stevens extend their lead to 19-points after an amazing back of the grid to second position effort in their JOTA Oreca-Gibson.

Joshua Pierson and Oliver Jarvis lead the chase for United Autosports, while Ferdinand Habsburg, Rui Andrade and Norman Nato have come in to contention in third place albeit 27 points behind the JOTA trio.

The second consecutive Pro/Am victory for a resurgent Algarve Pro Racing squad has seen Steven Thomas, James Allen and Rene Binder take over the lead of the title battle for those teams that field a bronze categorised driver.

They are now two points ahead of Francois Perrodo, Nicklas Nielsen and Alessio Rovera who finished ninth in class after taking a mid-race penalty for a technical infraction relating to downloaded data not being transferred.

In the LMGTE Am category the TF Sport team of Ben Keating and Marco Sorensen saw their lead reduced to just four points as David Pittard, Paul Dalla Lana and Nicki Thiim crept up on the team which ended its 6 Hours of Monza in shocking fashion with that large accident at the Roggia chicane.

Monza winners Harry Tincknell, Seb Priaulx and Christian Reid got to within 20-points of the TF Sport trio as the WEC heads to Fuji in seven weeks time.
