Belgian FIA WEC round presented to media at special press conference in Liège
A press conference was today held in Liège, the capital of the province where Spa-Francorchamps circuit is located, to promote the upcoming TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps (9-11 May).
Belgian press had the opportunity to meet and speak to the organisers, teams and and drivers competing in this year’s FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).
Frédéric Lequien, FIA WEC CEO, presented the 2024 season, where 14 manufacturers are fighting for victory across the highly-competitive Hypercar and LMGT3 categories.
Two Belgian WEC drivers were in attendance at the press conference including Dries Vanthoor who will compete at his home race in the headline Hypercar category with Belgian-based Team WRT driving the BMW M Hybrid V8. Vanthoor’s team manager Vincent Vosse was also there to speak with the media about BMW WRT’s programme this year in both Hypercar and LMGT3.
Tom Van Rompuy was the other home driver present today in Liege. Van Rompuy will pilot TF Sport’s Corvette Z06 LMGT3.R and spoke eagerly about wanting to repeat his strong performance from round one in Qatar last month.
Frédéric Lequien commented: "As confirmed by pre-sale tickets, we have every reason to believe that the TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps will be a huge success. This is all thanks to the presence of 14 manufacturers, the beauty of the cas and the format of the race. There will also be excellent support races and ample entertainment both on and off track helping to make this a truly family event. Everything is in place to make our race at Spa a tremendous sporting success."
Amaury Bertholomé, Director of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, added: "Along with Formula 1, the WEC is another big annual event at our circuit. The infrastructure is a credit to the level of this fast-growing discipline, and we're delighted with the growing success of the 6 Hours, which offers great economic spin-offs for the whole region."
With just a month to go before the event, the team at Spa-Francorchamps are working hard to provide the best possible welcome for the teams, the 37 cars entered in the WEC and more than 70,000 people expected to attend the race.
